Spring brings active wildlife and very unpredictable weather: cold mornings and evenings, occasional snow or rain, and wet or muddy trails.
Bring: a warm jacket or insulated layer, waterproof footwear, gloves and a light hat, a good camera (wildlife sightings are common), and bear spray for hikes.
Summer (June to August)
Summer has the warmest days, yet mornings often feel surprisingly cool. Expect chilly early hours, afternoon thunderstorms, and wildlife traffic in the park.
Bring: a light jacket or fleece, comfortable walking shoes (not flip-flops: sandals will not protect your feet on the trail), sunscreen and sunglasses, refillable water bottles, a daypack, a camera and binoculars.
Fall (September to October)
Fall is a favorite season for many visitors, with crisp air, beautiful color and fewer crowds. Mornings are often frosty.
Bring: an insulated jacket or layers, a warm hat and gloves, sturdy footwear, extra layers, and a camera for the scenery and the wildlife.
Winter (November to March)
Winter is quiet, peaceful and incredibly scenic, but it calls for serious cold-weather preparation: very cold temperatures, fewer services, and snow-focused activities. Most Yellowstone roads close to cars in winter; see Winter in Island Park.
Bring: a heavy winter coat, thermal layers, insulated boots, gloves, a hat and face protection, and emergency supplies for the car.
For your cabin
