The Mesa Falls Scenic Byway is Highway 47, the Mesa Falls Highway, connecting Ashton to the Island Park area. It is widely considered one of the most beautiful drives in the region.
The road starts in the potato, barley and wheat fields around Ashton, with the Tetons on the skyline, then drops into the Three Rivers Canyon where Warm River, Robinson Creek and the Henry's Fork meet. It climbs through the Caribou-Targhee National Forest past Lower Mesa Falls and Upper Mesa Falls, then crosses meadows where moose, deer and elk are often seen before it rejoins US-20.
The drive itself is short, but most visitors allow several hours to enjoy the stops. In winter the highway is closed to cars from the first plowable snowfall and groomed for snowmobiles; it usually reopens around mid-May.
